A
14-year-long research work done at Kanpur Test House, Kanpur, India,
and conducted jointly by a team of three scientists— Sarabjeet
S. Johar & G. S. Johar of India, and Manpreet S. Johar
of Canada, has developed a novel life-saving portable kit with the help
of which any one can check the true health status of his/her own kidney
within one minute.
The
invented kit precisely and instantly identifies presence of the
protein albumin in urine--a condition called albuminuria.
The monitoring ( through urine ) of any minor, major,
or total kidney failure has become too easy task now. By the
use of this kit ( named as
URINE
ALBUKIT
) the
presence of micro as well as macro quantities of albumin in urine
can be detected within just one minute by sitting comfortably at home
or office.
Albumin’s presence in urine is a classic sign of kidney disease
and its management carries powerful prognostic information
about the health of the kidneys. When kidneys are working properly,
albumin is not found in urine, but when the kidneys are damaged owing
to various reasons, then small amounts of albumin leak out into the urine
to issue red alert indicating some serious threat to the kidneys. If prompt
remedial measures are not taken then gradually elevated levels of albumin
start showing up in the urine that may eventually drag the person to the
stage of total kidney failure and then requiring dialysis. Thus, the new
kit would help in preventing countless premature deaths occurring allover
the world every year owing to the undiagnosed or undetected kidney damage
in unaware persons. The kit has also been termed by the inventors as ‘Dialysis
Warning Kit’. This kit would be the first of its kind that could
be used even by a non-medico to find out whether he/she is suffering from
some sort of kidney damage. The kit is particularly a boon for diabetics
and hypertension patients who are most prone to kidney damage.
Generally for albumin
testing in urine, the patient is wholly dependent on the pathologist, but
with the help of new kit one can get the same job done at home at
negligible cost.
It is also possible to
judge or predict the approximate value of serum creatinine
from the urine test results observed by the use of new kit.
In India alone there are
about 41 million diabetics ; China comes next, with 39.8 million ; U. S.
comes fourth with 19.2 millions ; Russia, Germany, and Pakistan have
9.6, 7.4, and 6.9 million diabetics respectively. All these people
need regular monitoring of their kidney’s health by urine albumin
testing. If albumin is not tested regularly to assess the degree of
kidney damage many millions of the world’s diabetics would end up in
the dialysis chamber, and might die prematurely. The kit gives virtually
instant results whether albumin in the urine is present in micro- or
macro-levels (in a diseased person), or if it is altogether absent (
in a healthy person
).
The test results
observed from the kit ( if found positive ) immediately make an unaware
patient of albuminuria absolutely sure of suffering from some simple to
most serious medical problem that necessitates him/her to make an
urgent visit to the doctor for taking remedial course of action.
Physicians, patients, and kidney-care organizations can all be
benefited by making use of the kit, whose accuracy is 1 00 %.
With the use of new kit the physicians can easily monitor the
prognosis of albuminuria of the patient under their treatment.
This kit would also prove
ideal for launching “Mass Kidney-Care Campaigns” by the world
Government in rural as well as urban regions. Such campaigns can
surely save, at very low cost, the lives of millions of
would-be-kidney-damage-patients all over the world.
For the seeking patent
rights on the new kit, a formal Patent Application under The Patents
Act – 1970 has already been moved by the inventors to the Controller
of Patents, Govt. of India, New Delhi.
